Dr. Noe's 10 Steps to Optimal Health

by Bernie Noe, ND

I often get people asking me what they can do to stay healthy, and I generally talk about diet and lifestyle, as well as vitamin D, fish oils, etc. For the first time, I have now created a "Top 10" list of the factors that I believe most influence health and wellness for most people. While there may be certain lifestyle factors that apply more to some people than others, I have attempted to select items that are important for pretty much everyone. I have also focused on items for which there is significant evidence and avoided items for which there is some legitimate debate.

  1. Be physically active (at least 45-60 minutes, 6 days per week)
  2. Don't eat sugar or white flour (this includes maple syrup and honey)
  3. Eat a rainbow each day (at least 8-10 servings of fruits or vegetables in a variety of colors)
  4. Don't smoke
  5. Avoid your food allergens
  6. Consume omega 3 oils daily (fish, fish oil, flax oil)
  7. Take vitamin D daily (2000-4000 IU)
  8. Avoid excessive alcohol (7 drinks or less per week for women, 14 for men)
  9. Watch your stress
  10. Engage (with other people)
